Agnes of God

Palm Beach Dramaworks. From Feb 22nd through Apr 6th, 2008. Agnes of God. Miami Art NewsAgnes of God, a play written by playwright John Pielmeier, will be on stage at a South Florida venue thanks to Palm Beach Dramaworks. A court appointed psychiatrist is asked to determine the sanity of a young nun accused of murdering her own baby. The Mother Superior seems bent on protecting Sister Agnes from the doctor.

In searching for solutions to the various mysteries of who killed the baby and who fathered the child, the doctor forces all three women, herself included, to face some harsh realities in their own lives and to re-examine the meaning of faith and the commitment of love. Agnes of God will feature Barbara Bradshaw, Margery Lowe and Lisa Morgan.

This drama is widely believed to be based on an actual incident, which occurred in a convent in Brighton, New York, just outside the city line of Rochester. However, Sister Maureen, the nun who killed her baby, was thirty-six years old, Irish, and well-educated. She was a Montessori teacher in New York State, which required teachers to obtain bachelor's degrees and to be certified. In order to obtain permanent certification, teachers also required a Master's degree in education.

Performances will take place at the Palm Beach Dramaworks located at 322 Banyan Boulevard in West Palm Beach.
