ArtCenter/SouthFlorida receives grant for Story Time Programs

ArtCenter/South Florida was recently awarded $10,000 from Dade Community Foundation’s Community Grant Program for the re-development of the monthly Story Time program for children ages 4 – 12. With the monies provided, ACSF will begin working with their new programmatic partner the Florida Center for Literary Arts at Miami-Dade College to develop a family literacy program. “Story Time presents parents or caregivers with a creative and fun way to spend time with their children while emphasizing the importance of literacy and visual arts in their lives. Children and their families will be encouraged to create unique books together, and spend time together reading and celebrating their collaboration,” says Jeremy Chestler, Executive Director, ACSF. An enhanced Story Time program involves monthly workshops providing creative writing instruction with Florida Center for the Literary Arts educators at the ArtCenter. Following the writing portion of each session, ACSF’s Artists-in-residence will then teach the visual aspect of the activity by instructing children and caregivers about different techniques for illustrating and binding their unique stories into books. Return visits intend to provide participants with more time to edit and refine their works and create new projects. Target audiences will be developed through outreach initiatives including visits to selected schools, in effort to connect with students from “arts-poor” neighborhoods. Story Time is an integral part of ACSF’s educational component, also known as ArtStudies. More than 30 classes including painting, drawing, photography, sculpting, knitting, sewing and jewelry-making are currently available at the Lincoln Road facilities during weekdays and weekends. A new Spring session begins on April 30th and runs through June 10th, 2007. The Summer session runs June 25th to August 5th, 2007. Need-based scholarships are available.
