BAC Art Canvas/ Quarterly Panels. Volumen I

Bakehouse Art Complex. Feb 25, 2011. 7:00 p.m.

Bakehouse Art Complex presents a panel titled “30 Years Later, Political Contemporary Art from Havana to Miami.” Moderated by Elizabeth Cerejido, panelists will also include Howard Farber,
Adriana Herrera and Ruben Torres-Llorca.

Elizabeth Cerejido, Curator, will moderate and speak briefly about the political aspects in the work of the generation of artists from Volumen I as a way of introduction. She will frame the socio-political narratives that shaped the exhibition that critic Luis Camnitzer described as “mythical” by discussing the censured photographic work of Rogelio Marin (Gory) from the late 1970s. The work Gory exhibited in Volumen I came out of this social context.

Adriana Herrera, Art critic, will map the continuity of a political perspective in the work of Ruben Torres-Llorca, one of the 11 artists featured in this “mythical” event.

Howard Farber, Collector, began collecting Cuban art in 2001. His book, Cuba Avant Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection was the accompanying catalogue to an exhibition that was organized by the Harn Museum in Gainesville and traveled throughout several venues in the United States. Mr. Farber will discuss the acquisition of pivotal works by Cuban artists of this generation.

Ruben Torres-Llorca, Artist, will speak about the critical strategies against mechanisms of power in his work, both from the perspective of its production in the context of Communist Cuba and in the economic and socio cultural hegemonies of the current global market.

Admission Ticket is $ 10. Bakehouse Members are free. Limited Seating. RSVP to 305.576.2828.
