Beyond Paper an exhibition by New World School of the Arts College visual artists barrows the traditional concept of a paper exhibition and gives a an intriguing twist. The idea for the show comes from a traditional category for exhibitions: works on paper. Drawings, prints and artist’s books are often grouped together in this category. Beyond Paper offers a variation on that idea by incorporating non-traditional materials into the artistic conceptual and execution process.

Drawings, prints and books are usually made on or of paper, but this exhibition takes the art form beyond that medium by incorporating non-traditional materials and using methods not usually associated with drawing, prints and books. While many works in the show follow this model, others stretch the concept of “drawing”, “print” and “book” and incorporate unconventional methods to deliver a radically different perspective. Among the works to be presented is a book made of cement and window screening, and works made in experimental drawing classes that include video and three-dimensional elements. This in addition to traditionally (and beautifully) executed monotypes, intaglio and silkscreen prints.

Organized by Kathleen Hudspeth, Aramis O’Reilly and Carol Todaro, the show includes drawings, prints and books, experimental drawing, and printmaking. Works were chosen from NWSA drawing, experimental drawing, printmaking and sketchbook journal classes by faculty members Kathleen Hudspeth, Carlos Gallostra, Aramis O’Reilly and Carol Todaro.
