Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art

Otherworld. From Jan 16th through Mar 10th, 2009.

Carol Jazzar presents Otherworld; an exhibition of found textile, garments and objects by Miami based art collaborative Guerra de la Paz. This will be the artist’s second solo show with the gallery. Puppet masters of the contemporary arts, Cuban born American collaborative Guerra de la Paz breathe life into their sublime appreciation for form with sculptures and installations characterized by anthropomorphic vibrancy and bucolic elegance. Inspired by the ready-made they honor a host of cultures with their references to traditional disciplines, historic themes and classic icons.

Captivated by the notion that change inevitably deserts the advocator they now summon upon the mythologies and religions of the world’s dead civilizations to demonstrate how the perpetual imbalance of a driving social dynamic can result in the redundancy or idolization of ideas.

By using the found object to revisit iconic imagery from human history the artists also render the pasts of the objects too. Perhaps as intricate and mysterious as the sculptural interpretations they represent, these previously owned items, each saturated with energy from a previous life, cause a wealth of associations to bud in the imagination.

A testament to the enduring significance of human life, the exhibition presents a trove of curious metaphors, allegorical symbols of faith and otherworldly creatures whose powers have long since outlasted the societies that created them.

Alain Guerra, born in Cuba Havana, Cuba in 1968 and Neraldo de la Paz, born in Mantanaz, Cuba in 1955 currently live and work in Miami, Florida. Established in 1996, Guerra de la Paz is the composite name, which represents their creative identity. In addition to a forthcoming exhibit ”Shape of Things: New Sculpture” at the Saatchi Gallery in London, England, the pair have exhibited in group shows since 1997 and solo shows since 2001 including the Chicago Cultural Center, IL, 21C Museum, Louisville KY, Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan WI, the Miami Art Museum, FL as well as in various galleries throughout the United States.
