August 10th, 2006Christopher Parkening is one of the world’s preeminent virtuosos of the classical guitar. He has captivated audiences around the world with his rare combination of dramatic virtuosity, eloquent musicianship, and uniquely beautiful sound. Parkening is recognized as heir to the legacy of the great Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia. Some of his most celebrated performances include appearances with Placido Domingo on Live from Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall’s 100th Anniversary celebration and two performances on the internationally televised Grammy Awards. Acknowledged as “Best Classical Guitarist” in the nationwide readers’ poll of Guitar Player Magazine for many consecutive years, Parkening was placed in their Gallery of Greats along with Andrés Segovia and English guitarists John Williams and Julian Bream. Parkening has received the 2000 Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award for “Best Classical Guitarist” and the 2003 University Musical Society’s Distinguished Artist Award. Christopher Parkening’s recital will present masterworks for the guitar with music by Sanz, Brouwer, Piazzolla, Villa-Lobos, Albéniz, Rodrigo, Torroba, and Castelnuovo- Tedesco, among others.
