From Oct 20th through Nov 12th, 2006The renowned Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF), is celebrating its 21st year this October and will showcase 200 top independent films, from the U.S. and around the globe. Whether intense or light and funny, the festival’s film selections are provocative, artistic, stimulating and entertaining. Filmmaker and celebrity sightings create an aura of excitement around this cinematic event while premiere screenings as well as trendy receptions offer opportunities to meet both moviemakers and actors alike. FLIFF celebrates its opening night with the screening of the film Volver, starring Penelope Cruz and directed by Academy Award winning director Pedro Almodovar. This surrealistic comedy is about three generations of women in Madrid who survive wind, fire and even death, thanks to goodness, audacity and a limitless vitality. Volver’s five leading ladies received the award for Best Actresses at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. The films also received Cannes award for Best Screenplay.
