Fourth Annual Winter Jewish Music Concert

Temple Israel of Greater Miami. Jan 14, 2012. 8:00 p.m.

This annual concert has gained attention as one of the nation’s leading concerts of Jewish music. Each of the first three concerts sold out ahead of time and was viewed by a capacity crowd of 700 people, as well as hundreds more who watched the concert through video streaming on the internet.

The concert will be presented this year under a new name. The first three concerts were called “Cantorial Concerts.” Alan Mason, program director explained that while traditional Jewish cantorial music is presented, it is only one of the types of music. “The concert presents a wide variety of Jewish music from around the world, including cantorial music, Ladino music, pop, classical, Yiddish, jazz and rap. We have changed the name to ‘Winter Jewish Music Concert’ so that people understand that this isn’t an old-fashioned cantorial concert.”

The special guest host for the concert will be Martin Bookspan, the long-time host of PBS’ Live from Lincoln Center who has a life-long love for and knowledge of Jewish music.

The 2012 concert will feature eighteen singers and six instrumentalists. The performers are from throughout Florida, as well as New York.
Famed vocal teacher Manny Perez praised the soulfulness of the 2011 concert: “It was truly a spiritually uplifting and cleansing experience. I left the concert feeling like this music was now somehow part of my soul.”

The concert is held in the beautiful and historic Bertha Abess Sanctuary at Temple Israel of Greater Miami, located midway between the Arsht Center, Midtown, and Wynwood. The sanctuary is the oldest synagogue building in continuous use in Florida.
