The Coral Gables Art Cinema is currently presenting its new series of programs of live-recorded performances from the renowned National Theatre of London. The second show in the series is the enchanting tragic comedy Travelling Light, which plays on February 25 and 26 at 1:00 p.m.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Nicholas Hytner (The Madness of King George, The Crucible), the play is an ode to the birth of the moving picture industry and a lovely reflection of life in a Jewish shtetl in Eastern Europe at the turn of the twentieth century. Travelling Light imagines the birth of silent film in a remote Eastern European village at the turn of the century. Motl Mendl, who’s entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph, makes this small Jewish community his camera’s focus. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story telling.

Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams. Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age, and stars Tony and Olivier award winner, Antony Sher. Travelling Light runs three hours (estimate) including a twenty-minute intermission, and is on-stage live at the National Theatre of London from January 11, 2012 through March 6, 2012.

Tickets to these special event programs are available for purchase in advance online at www.gablescinema.com, and in person at the box office during regular screening hours.
