Live one-night-only Cuban Rumba at Churchill’s Pub

Tue Jun 25, 2019

Frank Falestra (aka Rat), HICCUP (Hialeah Contemporary Culture Project), Rumba Wemilere, and Frita’s Autonomous Department are coming together to bring a particular moment of live Guaguanco, Columbia, and Yambu to the Churchill’s Pub.

Guaguanco, Columbia, and Yambu are component of the Cuban Rumba complex; they are at the core of the cultural impact of so-called Cuban music, along with sacred Afro-Cuban music. Some people sometimes call Rumba “popular music,” but we call it “Afro-Cuban working-class music” because the Rumba complex is but a sophisticated codification of the Afro-Cuban proletariat’s cultural experience.

The live session, which is in charge of Rumba Wemilere, will give a more in-depth look at the legacy of this art practice as it has been received and used by new generations. Rather than a staged concert, it will be a performative act open to public interaction, which is a key feature of actual Rumba.
