Students from Yokoso, Japan got a big Miami Beach welcome as part of the highly-regarded Sister Cities program – and MDPL was there to help. The Miami Beach Sister Cities International Committee, administered by the Office of the Mayor, engages the people of Miami Beach and its sister cities abroad in partnerships and exchanges that promote trade, economic development, cultural awareness and educational opportunities. George Neary, former Director of Miami Design Preservation League, was appointed Chairperson in 2009.

From August 31st to September 4th, the committee hosted a student exchange from Fujisawa, the Miami Beach Sister City in Japan. The purpose of the exchange was for the students to learn the value of cultural diversity, the importance of community service, global learning and leadership. Cultural and educational tours included visits to the Miami-Dade College Politics Department, the Botanical Garden and the Holocaust Memorial. A special Art Deco Tour of the Historic Architectural Art Deco District was lead by Sister Cities International Committee Member and long-time Art Deco Tour Guide Veronika Pozmentier.
