May 20th, 21st, 22nd, 2010. 7:30 p.m.
May 23rd, 2010 2:00 p.m.
High school students from New World School of the Arts Dance program will present their spring concert featuring a vast number of stirring choreographies, including Battlefield, an intense piece set to music by Les Tambours du Bronx by NWSA alum and Alvin Ailey Dance Company Artistic Director designate Robert Battle.
Among the choreographies that will capture the audience is Lara Murphy’s Away with Words, created especially for this year’s graduating class, combines classical and contemporary movement to explore elements of grammar. The ballet Passengers, a fantasy on train travel choreographed by Gerard Ebitz, was designed for two casts of 22 dancers with costumes inspired by the Cynthia Dufault collection from the 2009 fashion show.
Who Shall I Be Today, an original choreography and premiere by NWSA’s Rebecca Cannan with music composed and played live by Sean Dibble and Ulysses Perez, highlights the concept of multitasking as illustrated through the use of a stage full of hats and how the dancers’ roles are influenced – As the dancers begin to discover and explore the hats, they take on the different personalities and movements suggested by those hats.
Peter London’s Chirren of Guinea explores ways in which to render, in a contemporary voice, the traditional movement vocabulary of the ORISHAS of Santeria and Candomble, and LOAS of Voodoo. While no traditional ritual form is portrayed, the Caribbean choreography draws its inspiration from the dynamic life force producing energy (ASHE) and the deep inner concentration expressed in the state of complete devotion.
General admission is $12 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Free admission on Thursday, May 20, for NWSA and MDC Students and Faculty with ID.
