Orchestra Miami and Nestor Torres. Miami Concerts
What do you get when you mix one part jazz, one part Cuban Danzon and one part the lush classical sound of a full orchestral accompaniment? The next show in the much-awaited 2008 first official season of Orchestra Miami, South Florida’s new professional ensemble. On Friday, April 18th the Orchestra performs with guest artist Nestor Torres, the popular Grammy Award-winning flautist, in the groundbreaking show, En Concierto… Con Nestor Torres. The concert takes place at 8:00 p.m. at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, located at 2901 West Flagler Street, in Miami.

Jazz flautist Nestor Torres has been captivating audiences for more than two decades with his distinctive mix of Latin, Jazz and Pop sounds. By transforming the flute’s role in the current musical landscape, this remarkable virtuoso has earned a devoted following, and has practically established a new genre of popular music. In En Concierto… Con Nestor Torres he both goes back to his musical roots and at the same time expands his repertoire by performing with the classically based Orchestra Miami, under the direction of Music Director Elaine Rinaldi.

Using a core of outstanding former members of the old Florida Philharmonic, the Orchestra soars with Torres’ inspired flute playing as they tackle rumba-tinged symphonic compositions, traditional Cuban Danzones and contemporary works. The concert includes the World Premiere of the Danzon “Arcaño Al Bate,” by the recently deceased icon Cachao.

“Our En Concierto concerts are Orchestra Miami’s way of finding what is Miami, and putting it into music,” says Elaine Rinaldi. “Nestor Torres is the perfect choice for our first En Concierto, as he not only has the classical background, but the deep connection to Miami and its musical heritage. We are thrilled to be working with this stellar artist.”
