From Jun 9 through 19, 2011.
Out in the Tropics kicks off its second year with a panel discussion and opening reception at The Shore Club hotel in Miami Beach. The evening begins with the ideas and insights of some of the best GLBT contemporary artists in Words and Power, a panel discussion moderated by Founding Artistic Director Robert Rosenberg.
This opening event features festival artists Bitch, Keith Hennessy, Andrea Askowitz and South Florida-based performance artist Octavio Campos, in an in-depth discussion addressing how many GLBT artists turn words that have often been seen as oppressive and offensive – bitch, queer, dyke, fag – around to find different, and liberatory meanings.
Bitch, described as “a music box all of her own” and whose music was heard on Showtime’s The L Word, will perform on Friday, June 10 at 8:00 p.m. at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach.
Dirty Little Secrets by Jai Rodriguez, who is best known for his roles in the musical Rent and Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, co-presented with City Theatre and Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, will perform on Fridays, June 10 and 17 at 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Carnival Studio Theater at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami.
Bessie-awarding winning dance theatre work, Crotch (all the Joseph Beuys references in the world cannot heal the pain, confusion, regret, cruelty, betrayal or trauma…) by Keith Hennessy/Zero Performance, one of the pioneers of queer performance, will perform on Saturday, June 11 at 8:00 p.m. at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach.
A Women’s Reception and Screening of Cracks, a feature film by Jordan Scott set in a 1930s-era isolated English all-girls boarding school on the eve of WWII, will be screened on Sunday, June 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Coral Gables Art Cinema, 260 Aragon Ave, Coral Gables. Reception sponsored by Mary D. Events.
Lip Service: True Stories Out Loud, Miami’s most popular literary event produced by Andrea Askowitz and Esther Martinez, will take place on Saturday, June 18 at 8:00 p.m. at the Miracle Theatre, 280 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables.
