at the Lyric Theatre February, 2007In celebration of Black History Month, and in conjunction with The Black Archives, Purvis of Overtown – winner of Best Documentary Feature at the Florida Film Festival in 2006 – will be screened continuously Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during the month of February 2007 from noon until 5:00 p.m. at the Lyric Theatre located in Downtown Miami. A 66-minute documentary highlighting the life and career of Miami-based artist Purvis Young. An icon of African American culture and history, Young paint includes latex, acrylic, enamel and combinations of new painted blended with old paint that he has had for 25 years or more. His complex language expresses what he sees and experiences in the world around him in all its unpretentious stark reality. His symbols convey the on-going economic and cultural divides so prevalent in Miami and beyond through recurring images of black and white horses, pregnant women, highways and overpasses, convoys of trucks and trains, railroad tracks, airplanes, angels and Zulu warriors, whom he considers his tribe.
