WDNA Jazz Gallery. September 12, 2012. 7:30 p.m.
Renowned percussionist and multiple Grammy-nominated artist, Sammy Figueroa, will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of his Latin Jazz Explosion with a special concert, and art exhibition, in the WDNA Jazz Gallery on Saturday, September 15th at 7:30 p.m.
Regarded as one of the world’s leading percussionists, Sammy remains at the top for ‘A List’ jazz artists seeking the perfect percussive accompaniment. Among the list of artists with whom he has recorded or performed are Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, The Brecker Brothers, Sonny Rollins, Dave Grusin, Joe Williams, Michel Camilo, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Celine Dion, Chaka Khan, and Mariah Carey, to name a few.
He often appeared with the David Letterman Band and the Saturday Night Live Band, and has been listed and mentioned in several important books on music, including Miles Davis’ autobiography – “Miles.”
After years of working as a sideman and studio musician, Sammy moved to the foreground and formed his own band – The Latin Jazz Explosion. The band, which is based in Miami, has released three critically acclaimed albums, two of which have received Grammy nominations. The current members are considered an all-star ensemble and include pianist Silvano Monasterios, bassist Gabriel Vivas, drummer Nomar Negroni, saxophonist Troy Roberts, trumpeter Alex Pope Norris, and Sammy on percussions.
This special concert promises to be one of Sammy’s best and will no doubt be an unforgettable experience for those in attendance. Also, on view at the WDNA Gallery will be the exhibition “Realms of Impression” by Robert Rodriguez to coincide with the Latin Jazz Explosion 10th Anniversary event.
Influenced by academy award-winning directors, Hollywood actors, and elaborate set designers, Nuyorican photographer Robert Rodriguez draws his experience from years of gleaning details and techniques from legendary masters, and stamping his own brand on the images he portrays. Rodriguez has also spent considerable time shooting Sammy Figueroa in numerous concert settings. “Realms of Impression” also has the honor of being the longest running art exhibition at the Nuyorican Poet’s Café, in New York City. The exhibition now makes its Florida debut, in the WDNA Jazz Gallery, as part of the WDNA Fine Arts Concert, with Sammy Figueroa, and runs through November 3, 2012.
This WDNA Fine Arts Concert is an all-inclusive affair, with refreshments, wine, and catered cuisine. Tickets are $25 for WDNA members, $50 general admission. Reservation is required.
