From June 21st through July 28th, 2006Photographer Allan Jenkins has been taking pictures in Cuba since 1995 focusing on different social groups and many unseen social aspects of that fascinating country. The exhibit features photographs of copper miners, capturing the harsh and stoic strength contrasted with images of Cuba’s resilient youth. Allan Jenkins is a purist and traditionalist, working only with natural light and using old-fashioned alternative non-silver processes. His photographs are dark and mysterious, every one of them is a curious mixture of new and old. He aims to “capture the pure essence of beauty with an overtone of simplicity yet great attention to intricate and subtle details.” Unseen Cuba is an insightful collection of photographs carefully toned to capture the warmth and cigar stained weather-beaten expression of the Cuban human spirit. The exhibition will be on view until July 28th, 2006 at Casa Bacardi in UM’s Coral Gables campus located at 1531 Brescia Avenue. Coral Gables. For more information, please call: 305.284.2822
