From Nov 29th, 2005 through Feb 5th, 2006MOCA will be the site of the U.S. museum premiere of a new film by British artist Isaac Julien. True North, 2004, consists in a trilogy of histories of expeditions. The film is based on the story of Matthew Henson (1866 – 1955), the first African-American to reach the North Pole with explorer Robert Peary in 1909. Projected on three large screens, True North creates a sublime Arctic landscape. As part of the exhibition are a series of photographs related to the film. Isaac julien was born in 1960 in London, to émigrés from St. Lucia. He is considered an innovator and a true explorer of film as a medium in contemporary art. As in his own words, film is “a place where the fictional and the real meet.” Most of his work centers on the creation of a language for Black representation in art history, but rather than becoming an activist on these issues, his works reveal to us with a poetic and surreal imagery that transcends politics to become absolute beauty, expressed both in space and time.
